- Yeh, probably right. Look at what's happened since the release of Blitz
- Basic. Skid Marks, Gloom. Alright Blitz isn't the answer to your point,
- but it does demonstrate when there are good development tools, people will
- use them. Look at pd/shareware. There is software there now written using
- Blitz, that would probably never have been written otherwise.
-
- : 3) Lack of User BASE. No, not the millions of Amiga Users but
- : potential market. Our Company did a Market research in UK and found
- : less than 30% of Amiga Users surveyed had Harddisks. Less than 40% had
- : memory expansion. Less than 30% MultiSync Monitors. Less than 30% had
- : more than 68020. Less than 20 % had CD rom drives. That is UK figures
- : done about a year ago. Milage may vary. Who are we going sell seroious
- : software to? A500 users? There may less Mac users but they are well
- : speced machines.
-
- Are we talking Amiga Users here, or Amiga owners? Fact is there's a lot of
- Amigas been sold in UK, but how many are still used? ...I've got three
- A500, one is dead, another in bits (I'm experimenting!) and the other I
- have sat in front of the TV next to the CD32. Including the A1200 I have 4
- Amigas (exlcuding the CD32), I only really use 1 of them.
-
- I think that probably there's more expanded Amiga's out there now.
-
- : 4) HW spec. 8 bit WB was wonderful when EGA was the standard. 8 bit
- : WB is also VERY slow even on A4000/40. I know, I have one. Most PC now
- : days run 800x600 in 8 bit or more. They usually have 1024x768 in
- : 16million colours. How many AMiga users have Hi-res graphics cards.
-
- Yes. Agreed.
-
- : Face it. Its evolution. If you dont evolvove, you DIE. Computers have
- : come and gone. They all had supporters. Take C64, ZX Spectrum, Atari
- : ST. All were ahead in their times. None evolved...
-
- You have to evolve yes. I think with the 8 bit C64, Speccy, they evolved a
- little, C128, Spec +2, +3, nobody really bothered with them because of what
- was around the corner - Amiga. ST. I don't think its right to say ST was
- ahead in it's time, when it was first released it was a joke, when Atari
- got the ST together, STFM DS disks, the A500 was on top of it.
-
- It's a lot to do with the OS though. The Acorn Archimedes were powerful
- machines, but the OS let them down. I saw an Acorn A3000 for sale S/H the
- other day with monitor/software/extra ram for 150 UKP, that in raw power is
- better than A1200.
-
- : We will wait and See how AT do with the new Amigas. Power PC should
- : bring the speed up to date. They also need to bring the graphics up to
- : date. Then they need to SELL them. We will see REAL loyalty of the
- : Amiga users IF & WHEN they buy these NEW machines. Because no matter
- : how loyal they are to their A500, A600, A1200, A2000, A3000. If they
- : dont buy the newer, more powerful machines; there will be no market
- : for SW DELELOPERS to WRITE FOR THE AMIGA.
-
- I will ONLY buy the new machine if it's a lot better than what I've got
- now, if the gfx are a lot faster, and if it represents good VFM. I'm not
- just gonna through 3 years of expanding my A1200 in the bin while the
- machine can still do what I *need* it to do.
-
- I think the Amiga user base is probably smaller than it was a year ago,
- undoubtedly some people have moved to Pentiums because they couldn't wait
- to see what would happen, but with that I think the average spec is a lot
- higher now.
